Career Stuff

Start thinking about jobs and internships immediately! Many summer internships have Fall application deadlines (government opportunities especially). 

The Department of Statistics is under the College of Arts & Sciences, so you're eligible to use all the resources available at the Arts & Sciences Career Services. The School of Informatics & Computing (SOIC), the Kelley School, and the School of Environmental & Environmental Affairs (SPEA) all have their own career services -- you do not have access to these advisors or job boards, but most career events these schools host (i.e. career fairs) are open to ANY student.

- Create your account and post your resume to be visible to employers (Employers look for qualified applicants this way!!)

- Access job search engine for jobs, internships, GA positions, etc. in Bloomington and across the world

- See the graduate career advisor at Career Services to help update your resume or coverletter

- Search https://careers.college.indiana.edu/events/ for upcoming career events (company info sessions; networking events; etc.)

Career Fairs

Career fairs are the best way, in my opinion, to land a job/internship. Nothing beats meeting & speaking to a candidate in person. The Arts & Sciences Career Services Center has practice sessions to help you prepare!

- College of Arts & Sciences Career Fair (occurs ~early September & ~January; on campus)

- School of Informatics and Computing Career Fair (off-campus, with shuttles from campus that will take you there; open to non-SOIC students; occurs ~early September & ~January)

- School of Public and Environmental Affairs Career Fair (at least occurs ~September, not sure about Spring; on campus)

- Kelley Business School Career Fair (at least occurs ~September, not sure about Spring; double check if open to non-Business students; on campus)

A lot of software is available for download from iuware.iu.edu.

Some programs aren't free to download, but you can still use them from your computer via iuanywhere.iu.edu, as long as you have internet connection and are connected to the IU VPN (directions: https://kb.iu.edu/d/aygt).

General Advice From Past MSSS Students

• Ask second-years for help! Most second-years are totally willing to help you out and they've gone through many of the same classes.
• Go to office hours! It's free help and a great way to build relationships with your professor (who might one day be your advisor, or the one you need to write you a reference letter!). Professors want you to do well in their classes and they host office hours just for you!
• Take initiative, look outside the stats department, and search out things for yourself. Are you interested in cyber security or biostatistics? Do you want to gain extra experience by volunteering your stats skills? IU has so many departments, professors, centers, clubs, etc. that if you do a little digging and reach out to people with questions, chances are you can find something that will help you get one step closer to your career goals!
